Pathetic. I believe not only was the club rivalry a problem, but also the cult that formed around Beckham. He was England's third or fourth best midfielder and yet the side was built almost entirely around him, rather than the far more talented Scholes or versatile Gerrard.

And what happed to the " playing Gerrard and Lampard at the same time doesn't work"?

Well they did say there were other reasons for failure other than the club rivalry.

I am 100% sure that them players you are talking about would be in the Semi finals right now given the draw we had.
Even Sweden were better then and probably Columbia too. .They hugely under achieved but they never had a draw like this lol

I see teams fail around one player alone, whether this is in the PL or International level. Managers appear to have their favourite players in the squad. Though I know this is early days but Garath Southgate has managed to create youth without rivalry, so the clip I posted suggested that. Germany have done this for years.

I love the fact also that Garath Southgate participates in the training programme.

Good points.
A string of backwards-minded managers and disgraceful wasteage of Scholes's talent was criminal.
But let's be honest, the England players of the 70s get off extremely lightly.
When English clubs choc full of English players were sweeping all before them in European club football, we failed to qualify for both World Cups.

We've failed miserably for decades, not just the "golden" generation.
Our tendency towards total paralysis of fear preventing highly paid footballers to complete simple 10 yard passes and committing woeful mistakes hasn't helped (Southgate is the first England manager with the foresight to see that "experience" can be baggage as well as an advantage if it's the wrong type of experience).
Also, we have suffered more than our fair share of bad luck through the years..... although some of it self-inflicted.

The Golden Generation vs The Current Mob

How many of The Current Mob would get into The Golden Gen starting XI?

I’m guessing not many. Kane probably.
