Maybe it would, maybe it wouldn't. But don't you think the extra 20 thousand odd extra seats have got something to do with that. ;)

In any case I thought both those games were a near sell out. Certainly not as many empty seats as is usually the case as far as I saw.
Going back quite a few years to the old turn style system at Upton. Countless times they would let 2 in as one and get bung a fiver. 35 thousand was more like 38. and 38 was 40.
Was in the chicken run as a nipper and the steward pulled me over the barrier and i sat that side because the gate guys let to many in.
I think that was fairly common practice at a lot of grounds back in the days of terracing and standing mate. Decent source of income for a bloke doing a couple of hours part time on turnstile control.

That's the away end isn't it?
Where, from up there they seem to have no problem making a noise and connecting with their team.
Spot on ! Their players don't seem to have an issue playing on the pitch or in the stadium either (although last season was not their best game)

Same thing used to happen at UP. In the last few seasons I sat in the East Upper and all around me were ST holders. For some of the less glamorous games, there would be massive gaps around me and then the attendance would be read out as 34,000 or so. It was clearly bollocks but they count those that had a ST but didn't attend.

Given the number of financial hoops clubs have to jump through could the reason possibly be to enable the end of year financial figures to add up ? Number of games times seats sold = gate revenue.? That's the only reason I can think of.

I can see the logic in reporting a figure LOWER than the actual number of paying customers. All to do with that nasty taxation stuff. But absolutely no advantage to inflating the figure.

We had a bloke in the west side we used to bung him few quid and 3 or 4 over the top.

West Ham then moved him to the chicken run. So we used to bung him a few quid over there. Lol.

Happy days.
