Yep.

Lyon 3-21 on the same pitch that Ali went for four and a half an over.

Foakes should be keeping wicket in tests. Bairstow should be batting at 5, and Buttler shouldn't even be in the squad.
Archer, assuming he's fit, should replace Anderson.
Moeen has the form of a number 11 with the bat, and his bowling just isn't good enough to make up for it.
I'd stick with the top 3, but Denly looks unconvincing.
I'd go with form and on that, Bairstow shouldn't be batting on Blackpool Sands in red-ball cricket.

And stick with the top 3 ?

Did you just see the one-day heave Roy got out to when trying to save a test match ? Certain players can do both disciplines. Roy isn't one of them.

I know Burns was out cheaply today but it was a cunt of a ball. All we've done is replace Cook with Burns. We still need a proper test opener.
Who else is there to slot in that top 3 though? Haseeb? I'd bring Cook back if he'd agree.
And, form aside, Bairstow can bat at test level, Buttler's batting is nowhere near good enough to play as a specialist batsman. I know Foakes only has a few tests, but his average is better than either Bairstow or Buttler.

Anyway this looks done. England have thrown away golden opportunities having had the Aussies 8 down for 120 odd, and then not being able to build a decisive lead after Burns hundred. Cricket matches are won and lost in those moments and England have thrown two away.

Burns
Stokes
Root
Denly
Roy
Buttler
Woakes
Curran
Broad
Archer or Stone if unfit
Leach

Cook has made it clear he's not returning. Bairstow is massively out of form in red ball cricket. If he gets a score today then fine but I'm not holding my breath. Denly in the last chance saloon and try Roy lower down. If he fails there then he's not a test player. So a choice between Foakes and Buttler. Foakes has also been in poor form for Surrey this season.

You don't play people to get back to form in an Ashes series.

Foakes must be in some piss poor form if you'd still pick Buttler after his 5 and 1 playing as a number 5. :D
Agree with moving Roy down the order. Too impulsive to open at test level.

Short of options. Buttler got an unplayable one in the first innings after they changed the ball. Haven't seen the second innings one yet. Foakes is a decent keeper but batting against Cummins, Pattinson and Starc ? Not sure about that. I'd put Buttler down to 6 though.

All over. Fortress Edgbaston ?

Huge mistakes made starting with playing with 10 men. I imagine the England bowling coach made the final decision as Anderson was always going to say he was ok. But what a cock-up. Even without him but with another bowler, Stone, the Aussies would have made 150 tops first innings even with Smith, then it's a psychological battle chasing over 200 to make England bat again. You don't, just don't risk your most important bowler without him playing match cricket for a month.

Couldn't handle Cummins' pace and Lyon's spin today although Roy was out to a shocker and Denly may not have been out at all. Have to fight fire with fire. Even if Jimmy had played that attack is all much the same with a crap spinner. Bowling Ireland out for 38 is one thing.

What's KP up to these days ?

Move woakes up the order - he’s been my favourite player this summer, with both bat and ball (relatively of course)
