Great London Flood of 1968

Post by Taansend » Fri Mar 13, 2020 7:36 am

I was born at home on Shooters Hill on September 16th 1968

My soon to be 6 year old sister had to help deliver me. My mum said it was something to do with the weather but I only just found out now that there was some bastard flood that weekend.

Funny how you randomly find stuff out, isn't it. A photo of Lewisham flooded was posted on a Facebook group I'm in called "I'm from s.e. London (innit)".

Don't remember that. But, I would have been three at the time so maybe it's not surprising!

My sister says she remembers a massive storm but no floods which, considering we were on a bloody big hill, isn't too surprising

1968 I was a child living in East Molesey by then in between the rivers Ember and Mole just where they entered the Thames.

We had 6ft of water through our house, the smell when it receded was unbelievable, but thanks to Govt grants we had central heating installed to dry out the house - luxury!

We were, had the army in amphibious vehicles delivering supplies! My old man refused to let us be evacuated.

We had a 8' x 10' fully loaded shed in our back garden about 20ft from the house, it ended up down the end of the garden about 80 ft away.

Will try and dig out som eof the old newspaper clippings etc. Heres a good Pathe News video https://www.britishpathe.com/video/floods-2
