French

Postby Taansend » Sat Aug 12, 2017 4:51 am

Been about 30 years since I spoke French. I used to be able to hold a conversation. Not great but my French was at about the same level as Portermans English currently is.

As I'll be there in 11 days I should probably make a bit of an effort so can anyone provide me with some handy French phrases?

Merci beaucoup :geek:

They love this one. Use it in a crowded bar - you'll make friends right away:

If you get lost in France you can either listen to some Bonnie Tyler or ask the nearest stranger...'Je pense que j'ai des verrues anales'......They will sort you out toot sweet.....

Idioms you may come across include:

"Connard", pronounced "connarr". I use this world a lot. It is one of the nastiest insults you can use. It is often received with a certain amount of shock, which is always nice.

If you hear someone say something or someone is "Mosh", it means it is dirty, ugly, distasteful. I expect you may hear this a few times :)

"Mec" is used a lot. It is frog for "guy".

"Truc" or "Petit Truc" is frog for "thing", and is used when they don't know the name for something.

"Putain" or "Putain Merde" is a general purpose exclamation. A bit like bloody hell. It is used when things don't go right or when you bang your knee etc. It's literal meaning is "Whore" or "Whore Shit".

They really do call the OB "Flics"

The phrase I heard all the time but could find in no dictionary for ages when i first got here is "Quand Meme", pron. "Cor Mem". It actually doesn't mean anything. It's used as a kind of filler phrase in conversation, like "know what I mean".

Most frogs will understand both the meaning and the emotion behind a good Anglo Saxon "Fuck You" or "Fuck Off" if delivered with sufficient gusto.

When in France I expect the French to speak English the filthy-smelling snail-munchers. And just be grateful we don't reek havoc with our longbows.

There are some words I like however, oubliette for example. And croque-monsieur.

It's not the principle. It's the money.
