There was a professor on the radio last week who's stem cell research lab fell into the category of gender pay gap.

The 5 experts (professors, PHD's, Masters) in the company were all men. The remaining analysts and lab assistants were made up equally of men and women and there was complete pay parity. Clearly the 5 most qualified/experts earned more than the lab assistants.

The radio host asked the guest why none of the top jobs were held by women and he responded by saying that none were available to recruit. He said that last years intake at University was 95% male and that ratio was reflected in the Uni applications too.

He went on to explain that over the last three years only one qualified female has become available for interview and she eventually went to work for the University itself. When pressed to explain why he said that women are just not particularly interested in that field of science. They tended to gravitate towards other sciences and used the example of the gender balance at Surrey University where they specialise in cosmology (which attracts far more female applicants).

The radio asked if there was some sort of affirmative action required to get girls involved but the professor said that was madness. They were trying to cure cancer and he needed the brightest and best available. If they were forced to 'box-tick' then it would hinder and slow their cancer research because they would be hiring unqualified people.

That's just one story and when explained it's understandable why men are earning more money at the lab. However it's viewed by people like Miss Smartie Pants as a genter pay gap and some sort of conspiracy theory.

Absolutely right, Gonzo. The vast majority of the time these pay gap issues rarely standup to any reasonable scrutiny.
This stuff is being pushed so hard without any real context you do wonder what the end game is.
If it's absolute, fundamental, equality at any price, you'd absolutely have to question that.

I'm not sure that the participants are smart enough to have thought of the end game mate. I think that they are all so wrapped up in their own little niche that they fail to see the real damage and bigger picture.

My missus is a midwife which is female dominated and rightly so, unfortunately much like all gender propoganda it denies the truth that men and women have differences and preferences.

Can't disagree mate. It just seems a fact of life that men and women have different attitudes and ambitions when it comes to work.

I read a story about someone suing Tesco because working on the checkouts paid less than working in the warehouse. And since most warehouse workers were men, it was somehow discrimination. Never mind that men working the checkouts got paid the same rate as women.
