Barking and Dagenham pub....memories..

Postby ToneLoc » Sun Apr 15, 2018 6:23 pm

I was chatting to some of the lads earlier about some old pubs in Barking and Dagenham.
Sadly neglected and closed down now but there were some rocking boozas back in the day.

If you have stories or pics, please share here.

I'll start with a quick-win.
The Roundhouse, Lodge Avenue. What a place for live music.
I was too young to remember the real legendary bands but still remember some really good amateur bands in the early 90s.
I used to play snooker next door in the club.
When the door opened, there was a wall of smoke that hit you in the face.

Also, I spent some time in the Merry Fiddlers when in was a kid. Loved that place.
The Fanshawe (Pipers) on Gale Street was "lively".

I'll stop there...... :D

The Roundhouse. Great place.

I remember seeing the Sensational Alex Harvey Band there. What a night.

I think we've had this thread before. My local was the Harrow in Ripple Road, shit pub but it was MY shit pub. Now closed. The other pub I used to drink in regularly was the Royal Oak, sometimes called the Fly House. Last I heard it was still open.

Crikey old chap, I hadn't realised you were so learned in DagPub lore :D.

My uncle had a shoe shop right next to The Harrow.
The Royal Oak (Fly House) is still there mate. Used to go in there on a Sunday evening for the "disco" :D

Spotted Dog - a decent pint
Brewery Tap -bunk up & a punch up in the same night .
The Westbury-same as above without the punch up .
The Harrow-as above but without the bunk up.

In long past summers I played cricket at Mayesbrook Park. We didn't have a club house so our 'home' was the Robin Hood, a stroll away. It also staged 'gentlemens' evenings', which were a source of mild titillation and many laughs. I saw Jim Davidson there before he got really famous. He came out with the original line, copied by many of, when seeing a young lad near the front, would say 'Are you old enough ? Does your Mum know you're here ?'. After the negative reply he'd say 'Well she will soon. she's on next.'

It's now sadly, a supermarket.

Special mention must also go to the Red Lion on North Street. It closed in 2008.

I used to go to see Barking when they played at Vicarage Road if West Ham were playing in some northern shithole and quite often we'd meet there for a pie, a pint and a game of bar billiards.

It's probably a mosque now.

Sad days.

Blimey,I have been in many pubs in the Dagenham & Barking area!As well the old night club Chains that used to be near the Barking dog!
There was so many pubs in Dagenham/Barking!The Cross keys which is still going as is the Eastbrook.
The Church Elm is now a library,I used too go in a little bar,in a snooker club!It was near my old works. It was called the cue ball,it was a rather pleasant place with a decent crowd. Its a funded church type thing now.
As many of you probably know,Dagenham has changed beyond recognition over the past couple of Decades.
