Mainly because they claimed to be an elite champions league club.

So you thinks it's an under achievement by our Football Club to be playing in the Europa League then?

You set your standards high, don't you?

The Europa League is not worth a rub of soap.
EVERY club sees it as a hindrance.

Off course we laughed at them, and still do.

They are founder members of the derided ESL, yet can’t even qualify for Champions league or Europa league.

I for one am very pleased that finishing 6th in the prem last season, above Tottenham and Arsenal, means we get to play in a European competition, that hopefully we put the required amount of effort into and will help the club to experience the rigours of playing in a European competition, whilst having to maintain domestic responsibilities.

Me too . Can’t see the point in not taking it seriously so that we can concentrate on the league and try to qualify for , er , the Europa League.

Not only does it raise the profile of the club being in the Europa League and adding the possibility of attracting better players, but also if it is taken seriously, and I mean looking to win the matches, brings a financial gain to the club as well, obviously not as big as the champions League but still worthwhile.

€600,000 for every group stage win, €200,000 for a draw
€2.3m if we make it to the knockout stages.

The last eight is worth an extra €1.8m, €2.8m for the semi-finals,
€4.6m for reaching the final
€7.5m more for the winners.

We should at least be looking to get through the group stages, maybe 3 wins and a draw, would bring us in 4.3 million + the 4.5 million we got for qualifying nearly 9 million for 3 away and 3 home games, what with ticket sales as well is surely worth that little bit more effort than our last 2 ventures into a European competition.

It has to be taken seriously. Doubt the likes of Zouma and Vlasic would have considered West Ham as employers if we hadn't been in European competition.. And Rice would be preparing to face Zenit St Petersburg this week instead of getting ready for a flight to Croatia.

I don't particularly like the set up of the Europa League.I much preferred it in it's old format, knock out and jeopardy from the start than the League format. The introduction of the 3rd places losers from the CL has well is absolutely ludicrous in my book.

But ,as some of said,it raises the profile of the club and it lets our fans experience a few trips away too.

I will agree with you,it's going to effect our League form big time.
