Betting Question

Post by Whiskyman »

Bloke in the pub last night asked what a lot of people thought was a dumb question. But after thinking about it maybe he has a point.

The question was if you bet on a player to score at any time nd he scores an own goal does the bet win ? And if not (which we all thought was the case) why not? After all a goal is a goal.

We had a sweepstake in our bar for the first scorer in the West Ham v Liverpool 2006 cup final

One of the locals, a Liverpool supporter drew out Jamie Carragher and was dismayed as the cunt hadn't scored for ages. The rest is history, the souse git opened the scoring with an own goal, and after much deliberation we paid up, because he was in fact the first official goal scorer albeit an own goal.

Whether the betting companies agree with this I don't know

I get that. I'm guessing there's some sort of disclaimer in the small print somewhere.

From the Paddy Power website

If the first goal is an own goal it does not count as a goal for settlement purposes. All bets on first goalscorer will therefore be settled on the next goal scored. Own goals do not effect the settlement of any bets placed on correct score or other related markets. A goal will be considered an own goal if it is officially recognised as such on the day of the game - subsequent decisions by the dubious goals panels do not affect settlement.

Taking this quite literally, if the final score is 1-0 by virtue of an own goal they SHOULD pay out on 0-0 correct score bets

I bet they dont

They will pay out on 0-0 in that circumstance.

Top tip if you fancy backing a 0-0 scoreline, back no goalscorer instead. That way if an own goal is scored and the result is 1-0, you get paid out. Price for no goal scorer or 0-0 draw is always the same.
