Should We Consider Changing The Offside Law

Post by Whiskyman »

Does anyone else, like me, often get frustrated when a goal is chalked off because an attacking player is marginally ahead of the defender and thus offside ? Obviously we need the offside rule to stop what we used to call "goal hanging" as kids but would it maybe be better if instead of a player being offside if any part of his body which can score a goal is in an offside position the rule was changed slightly so that if any part of his body is onside the goal stands ? Just a thought.

Think you’ve come up with this one before.

I think it’s still gonna come down to fine lines and margins with the magic line on the screen

If you have to draw a line to determine it, then advantage given to attacking team, goal stands.
It’s not what you do it is the way that you do it.

It's bollocks.

The game's about goals. And celebrating them. To wait 3 fucking minutes is an embarrassment.

If the ref gives a goal, freeze-frame the moment, no drawn lines, 5 second limit to have a look with the human eye. Goal given or chalked off.

End of.

I did mention it on another thread somewhere. It will still come down to fine lines as you say but it would favour the attacking side, rather than the defending one which is why I think it might be worth considering. The general consensus seems to be it's goals that people want to see and that small change ought to lead to more of them.

It would mean more goals and reward skill so its a good idea.

Can't disagree with that. My idea's better though. ;)

It's laughable really, back in the two points for a win day the powers to be decided to introduce the 3 point system in an effort to make the game more entertaining. It worked to an extent, encouraging teams to go for the 3 points instead of settling for a draw. It produced more goals per game as a result instead of the Arsenal like 0-0.

Now after all their efforts to successfully gain wished for results they decide to look for marginal ways to bring to goal tally down, and lost is the real intent of the offside rule, which imo was to stop , as whiskey said, players standing on the goal posts, or line waiting for a pass. So I agree with whiskeys idea, any part of the body in an onside position then goal stands, and in most cases you wouldn't need VAR.

I dunno why I’m not getting it but to me fine lines are fine lines. Doesn’t matter if a heel can keep him onside or a nose can put him offside
