Last year's excess death rate, when applied against population size was marginally worse than previous years
Which is why a baseline over 5 years smooths out individual year anomalies.

These are the gov.uk figures of non-COVID recorded deaths from last year.
Obviously COVID is higher than all of these pre-vaccine but just a few taps on a calculator to work out daily death rates and compare these to the mortality figures for the 3rd “wave” should help put things into perspective.
