Another summer transfer window and another link to Real Betis midfielder William Carvalho; is it worth trying to sign him?

Well, if a defensive midfielder at a reasonable price becomes available, then yes. We should only look to sign someone who is going to improve our squad, but is Carvalho worth it?

He made a total of 43 appearances in all competitions for Real Betis in the 2018/19 La Liga season, registering five assists for a team who finished comfortably in mid-table.

Portuguese international William Carvalho in action

Having only signed for the Béticos last summer in a deal worth €20m, surely Carvalho would be enjoying his time in Spain and is unlikely to be seeking a move away yet. The Portuguese international would cost around £20-30m, and as the club reportedly offered him £100,000 per week last summer, again the questions has to be asked – is he worth the transfer fee and weekly wages?

If a defensive midfielder is to be signed this transfer window, maybe the likes of Thiago Mendes of Lille, Diego Demme of RB Leipzig or even Francis Coquelin of Valencia could suffice. I think we are going to have to spend a fair share of cash to sign a quality player in this position.

West Ham fan for as long as I can remember. I was flukey enough to watch The Irons beat Bury 10-0 in my first ever game . . . True to form, West Ham then went out and signed their central defender 😬
