West Ham could step up their pursuit of Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez following Uruguay’s exit from the Copa America last night.
The Uruguayan could only watch from the bench as his side were defeated by Peru on penalties in the quarter-finals after the match finished goalless after 120 minutes of action.
However, this is good news for the Hammers and they should start to push forwards the negotiations over the next couple of weeks while Gomez takes a two-week holiday and discusses his future with his agent and family/friends.
Manuel Pellegrini made Gomez a top target at the beginning of the transfer window, and remains persistent in his desire for the forward, but a deal is looking unlikely at this moment in time.
Valencia are also a club very interested in capturing the signing, and with the striker reportedly wanting to stay in Spain, it could make it difficult for the Hammers – not to mention Valencia have Champions League football to offer for next season.
Over the course of the next fortnight, expect to see movement for this deal, whether that be positive or negative for Pellegrini and his team.
