West Ham look set to replace the absence of midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate with a deal for Fiorentina midfielder Carlos Sanchez.

The Colombian looks set to join the Hammers on a season-long loan, giving Manuel Pellegrini the squad depth he both desires and requires.

Lucas Perez looks to become the Hammers’ ninth summer signing, with Sanchez expected to follow before the end of the window.

Sanchez is set to be brought in to cover both Declan Rice and Pedro Obiang; meanwhile contesting them both for the starting XI spot.

The 32-year-old is expected to complete his move to West Ham before the transfer window closes, and although he is not the fans’ favourite choice, he should be backed if Pellegrini wants him at the club.

Carlos Sanchez registered 40 appearances in his time at Fiorentina and looks set to be a signing not of excitement, but of requirement.

You can watch highlights of Carlos Sanchez in action here.

Although every fan would prefer a big signing to go into that midfield role, people must remember that this is a project, which needs to gradually progress to succeed.

He has already endured a spell at Aston Villa when they were amongst the Premier League, so he already has the awareness of how tough this league is, which is a benefit of signing him.

Most of our business conducted has been players for the future, but Sanchez is a player for this season and I suspect this season only.

We have spent close to, if not £100m this transfer window, so for fans to start complaining now seems absurd to me.

If Pellegrini wants to sign him, then let’s give him a chance. As I stated, he will only be used for squad depth and it is a department we needed to fill.

Time will tell with this signing, but as far as our overall transfer business is concerned, it has been our most successful window in recent years and we should be very excited going into the new season.

West Ham fan for as long as I can remember. I was flukey enough to watch The Irons beat Bury 10-0 in my first ever game . . . True to form, West Ham then went out and signed their central defender 😬
