The ever going injury crisis in East London.
Less than three months into the season and with first team players dropping like flies, is there something in the water at West Ham? We take a look at the ever growing injury list so far for the hammers..
Saturday’s London derby against Spurs saw the hammers treatment room claim yet another victim this season, in Andriy Yarmolenko. News spilled earlier this week that the Ukrainian would spend a lengthy period on the side lines only after recent news broke that summer recruit, Carlos Sanchez, would be out for the rest of the season.
But the injuries started well before the new Premier League campaign with the first blow coming to Argentine starlet, Manuel Lanzini. Just days before the World Cup was set to spark into action the 25 year old ruptured his cruciate knee ligament causing him to be side-lined until at least early January.
Next up to be hit with the curse of East London were duo, Winston Reid and Andy Carroll. More regular to the treatment room then not, the pair added to the list during pre-season which saw the irons head into the first game of the season with three major injuries already.
Things didn’t get much easier in September, to make matters worse 33 year old Carlos Sanchez would sustain a knee injury 9 minutes into the Carabao Cup thrashing of league two side, Macclesfield. The Colombian international faces months out of action with an unknown date of return.
A week later, the squad would be cut even thinner as glandular fever would strike Javier Hernandez making him unavailable for selection in two important fixtures against Manchester United and Brighton.
The international break only bought more misery as it started to leak that hammer of the year, Marko Arnautovic, was dealing with pain in his knee. ‘‘The knee is not the best’’ the Austrian said, “It is going to take some time as I have some inflammation in my bone’’ and although he claims he is ‘fit’ you have to wonder what this might do in the long-term for the Austrian.
Andriy Yarmolenko may have already undergone successful surgery but the winger will still miss the majority of the season after a lively start to the campaign.
So, is it simply just bad luck or is there something deeper to worry about for the hammers?
